ANPR and LPR Cameras for Business in South Africa

ANPR and LPR cameras read vehicle number plates automatically and turn them into searchable data: gates that open for approved vehicles, alerts when a flagged vehicle arrives, a log of every vehicle in and out, and searches that find a registration in seconds. CCTV Security Surveillance designs and installs ANPR cameras for estates, logistics yards, factories, mines, office parks and car parks across South Africa.

LPR (licence plate recognition) and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) are two names for the same technology. We have been in electronic security since 1967, with 7,000+ clients, an in-house 24/7 control room and four branches. To plan it for your site, book a gate survey.

The Risk of Not Knowing Which Vehicles Are on Site

  • !Handwritten vehicle registers are slow, easy to falsify and depend on the guard on duty
  • !Finding one vehicle after an incident can mean watching hours of video
  • !Nobody is warned when a vehicle linked to earlier trouble comes back
  • !Remotes and tags get shared, lost or passed on to people who should no longer have access
  • !A general CCTV camera that isn't set up for plates may not capture a readable registration, especially at night

What ANPR and LPR Cameras Deliver

  • ✓Automatic gate access for staff, residents, tenants and approved suppliers
  • ✓Watchlists that flag unwanted vehicles and alert security, the owner or a control room
  • ✓A record of every vehicle in and out, with the time and an image
  • ✓Searches that find every visit by a registration in seconds
  • ✓Make, model and colour recognition on systems that support it, to help find a vehicle whose plate is hidden, false or tampered with

How ANPR Cameras Work

An ANPR system works in five steps, in real time, without anyone pressing a button. Read the full explanation in how LPR and ANPR work.

1. Image capture

A camera at a gate, road or car park captures the vehicle and its plate.

2. Pre-processing

The image is enhanced and the plate area is isolated.

3. Character segmentation

The plate is split into individual characters.

4. Optical character recognition

Each character is read from its shape, size and pattern.

5. Storage and matching

The plate, time and location are stored and checked against allowed lists and watchlists.

What Affects ANPR Accuracy

Read accuracy comes down mainly to how the camera is planned and installed, which is why we look at each read point on site before specifying anything:

  • ✓Camera angle and height: a clear, straight-on view of the plate
  • ✓Distance and zoom: enough pixels on the plate for each character to be read
  • ✓Vehicle speed: cameras and settings designed for moving vehicles, with traffic slowed at the read point
  • ✓Lighting and glare: infrared illumination for night reads, and positioning that avoids headlight glare
  • ✓Plate condition: dirty or damaged plates will cause some misreads, which make, model and colour recognition can help with
  • ✓Weather and maintenance: rain and dust need planning for, and lenses need to be kept clean

Where Businesses Use LPR Cameras

Estates and complexes

Resident and visitor access at the gate. See CCTV for estates.

Logistics yards and warehouses

Delivery tracking and gate control. See CCTV for logistics.

Weighbridges

Linking number plates to loads and weights. See weighbridge integration.

Office parks and car parks

Automated entry and parking. See parking guidance.

Mines and industrial sites

Logging vehicle movements at site gates, with records that support SHEQ requirements.

Farms and remote sites

Logging vehicles at entrances. See farm CCTV.

ANPR with Gates, Monitoring and Analytics

ANPR is most useful when it is connected to the rest of your security. It can open boom gates and other vehicle barriers for approved vehicles and hold unknown ones for verification. Linked to our offsite monitoring control room, operators can verify a flagged vehicle and open the gate remotely for verified visitors, which also helps prevent collusion between on-site guards and unwanted visitors. It can also run alongside wider AI video analytics such as intrusion and PPE detection.

Research on car parks points the same way: a 40-year meta-analysis found CCTV schemes in car parks were associated with a 37% reduction in crime, the largest effect of any setting studied, and about 16% lower odds of property crime and of vehicle crime (Piza et al., 2019). These findings are about CCTV in general, not ANPR results from a specific site.

POPIA and Number Plate Data

Plate data linked to people is personal information under POPIA, so plan how it will be handled before the cameras go live. Define why you collect it, how long you keep it, who can search it and how it is protected. We advise on the safeguards that suit your site, and the Information Regulator publishes guidance on your obligations.

  • There is no practical difference. LPR (licence plate recognition) and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) are two names for the same technology, which reads vehicle number plates automatically.

  • Accuracy depends on camera placement, lighting, vehicle speed and plate condition. A well-positioned, correctly configured camera reads most plates reliably, while poor placement or dirty plates reduce accuracy. We check each read point on site before recommending a camera.

  • Yes. ANPR integrates with [boom gates](/services/gates-and-barriers/) and access control, so approved plates are let in automatically and unknown or flagged vehicles are held for verification.

  • Yes, with cameras designed for plate reading, which use infrared illumination to read plates in the dark.

  • Yes. ANPR systems use cameras and processing designed for moving vehicles, although slowing vehicles at the read point improves reliability.

  • Yes, but plate data linked to people is personal information under POPIA, so you need a lawful purpose, appropriate safeguards and a defined retention period.

  • Dedicated ANPR cameras, processing and gate integration cost more than general CCTV, and the total depends on how many lanes you need to read and what the system must connect to. A free on-site assessment gives an accurate, tailored quote.
