Boom Gates, Turnstiles and Gate Access Control for Business in South Africa

Boom gates and turnstiles decide who and what physically gets through each entrance to your site. CCTV Security Surveillance supplies and installs boom gates, vehicle barriers, turnstiles and other physical barriers for commercial and industrial sites across South Africa, and links them to access control and CCTV so each barrier opens only for a verified person or vehicle, with a record of who came through.

We have been in electronic security since 1967, with 7,000+ clients and four branches in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape. The quickest way to start is to book a site survey: we walk each entrance with you, look at the traffic it carries and recommend the barrier that suits it.

The Risk of an Uncontrolled Entrance

  • !A manned gate depends on one person checking every vehicle and visitor, on every shift
  • !Tailgating lets a second person or vehicle follow an authorised one straight through
  • !Paper registers can't show who actually entered, and are slow to search after an incident
  • !A barrier that isn't linked to access control or CCTV stops traffic but leaves no evidence
  • !Staff, visitors, deliveries and contractors sharing one entrance slow each other down and are harder to control

What Gate Access Control Delivers

  • ✓Barriers that open only for valid credentials: cards, tags, biometrics, mobile access or a recognised number plate
  • ✓A timestamped record of every entry, which can be checked against CCTV footage
  • ✓Separate routes and rules for staff, visitors, deliveries and contractors
  • ✓Visitor verification at the gate through a linked video intercom
  • ✓One PSIRA-registered (No. 4412150), SAIDSA Grade A (ASP-1571) provider for the barrier, the credentials and the cameras

Boom Gates and Turnstiles We Supply and Install

The right barrier depends on what passes through the entrance, how often, and what happens if the wrong person or vehicle gets in. These are the barriers we supply and install:

Boom gates and vehicle barriers

Control vehicle entry and exit automatically, opening only once valid credentials are presented and the vehicle clears the safety beam. Suited to office parks, yards, factories, estates and parking areas.

Turnstiles

Restrict pedestrian access to one person at a time and record accurate footfall counts. Suited to staff entrances, plants, mines and busy public areas.

Revolving doors

Manage entry to one person at a time while keeping conditioned air inside the building. A common choice for banks and hospitals.

Man traps (air locks)

A dual-door system where the first door must close before the second opens, for banks, cash rooms and other sensitive areas.

Spike barriers

Steel spikes that rise from the ground to stop unauthorised vehicles, often used in parking areas where one-way traffic must be enforced.

Bollards

Fixed or automatic rising bollards that control traffic flow and protect pedestrian areas and building entrances from vehicle intrusion.

How to Choose the Right Barrier for Each Entrance

Most sites need more than one type of barrier. During the site survey we work through these questions for each entrance:

  • ✓Who uses it: vehicles, staff, visitors, deliveries or a mix, and whether they should be separated
  • ✓How busy it gets: shift changes and delivery peaks matter more than the daily average
  • ✓What is at risk: a staff car park and a cash room need different levels of control
  • ✓How people will identify themselves: card, tag, biometric, mobile or number plate
  • ✓Inclusive access: barriers designed for comfortable access for people with special needs, without weakening security
  • ✓What happens in a power cut or an emergency, including how people get out

Gate Access Control Linked to CCTV

A barrier is only as good as the decision behind it. Access control decides who gets through, while CCTV records what happened. With both linked, each entry can be checked against video. Adding ANPR and LPR cameras lets approved vehicles through a boom gate without a card or remote, and a video intercom lets someone verify a visitor before opening it.

Research supports layering these measures. A 40-year systematic review found that CCTV combined with other measures, such as access control, produced larger effects than cameras alone (Piza et al., 2019). A separate meta-analysis of alley gating, which restricts the routes offenders use to reach properties, found modest but significant reductions in burglary, with little evidence of crime moving to nearby streets (Sidebottom et al., 2018). These findings are about those measures in general, not results from a specific site.

Barriers also need to keep working when the power fails. We can plan inverter and solar backup for entrances that have to stay in service during load-shedding, and add 24/7 offsite monitoring so our control room can see the gate.

Gates & Barriers FAQ

  • A boom gate controls vehicles and a turnstile controls people. A boom gate lifts for a vehicle once valid credentials are presented, while a turnstile lets one person through at a time. Many sites use both: boom gates at the vehicle entrance and turnstiles at the staff entrance.

  • Gate access control links a physical barrier, such as a boom gate or turnstile, to a system that checks who is allowed through. The barrier opens only for a valid card, tag, biometric, mobile credential or number plate, and each entry is recorded.

  • Often, yes. During the site survey we check what is already installed and whether it can control a new barrier. Some equipment can be kept and some may need upgrading; the survey tells you which before anything is quoted.

  • Yes. [ANPR and LPR cameras](/services/anpr-lpr-cameras/) can read a number plate and open the boom for approved vehicles, and hold unknown or flagged vehicles for verification. Tags and cards are other options.

  • Cost depends on the type of barrier, how many entrances you need to control, the credentials you choose and any integration with CCTV or existing access control. A free on-site assessment gives an accurate, tailored quote.
